Attack on Heroes: Resurgence is a web-series project created by Julia Corsi and Mari Rush over the span of four years. It was a personal project endeavor to explore what it means to be a project leader, as well as understanding what goes into a production.

Production
Attack on Heroes: Resurgence was my first independent, large-scale project that I've ever created. The first iteration of the project in 2014 had many flaws, and was put on hiatus shortly after it began. By December 2015, I had reached out to my co-creator and we both agreed on starting the project up again, but doing it right this time.
By November 2018, we had successfully published 10, 15-minute long episodes to YouTube.

Pre-production, production, and post were handled by two people (Mari, my co-director) and myself. We tasked ourselves with production planning, scriptwriting, character & setting documentation, and communicating with our team of 30 for voice talent and direction.

My process for creating the illustrations for each episode followed the same pipeline every time:
Rough Sketch
Finalize
Detail Shading + Cel Shade
Digital Draft
Cleanup
Flat color

This is a breakdown GIF I did during production of Episode 9. This also features the updated style that occurred unintentionally over the course of production, resulting in a much cleaner, sophisticated look.
These illustrations were also created to further push the narrative, as well as help guide the viewer's 'theater of the mind'.

Style Change
Since the project was developed over a 4 year period and by one artist, the style from Episode 1 was much different than the style that was seen in the later episodes (Ep. 5 - Ep. 10), since my style improved and changed over time.

Episode 10
With the style change and my skillset improving over the years, I wanted to use it to my benefit, and do a similar thing that FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood did very well, which was aging up the characters without the use of a time-skip, which is a popular trend in anime shows. I believe this effect was appropriately achieved.

With this character in particular, I wanted his appearance to reflect the development he goes through during Season 1, which is going from meek and (in this superhero universe) afraid of using his powers to a more confident and enabled version of himself.
The design choices I made for the older version of this character included a hairstyle that indicated the passing of time, a more defined and mature jawline & facial features, as well as a broader span to his shoulders (think Age 15 compared to Age 18).
Episode Format
Much like the art style, the Episode formatting changed drastically between 2014 and 2016, when production began for Resurgence. Not only did I decide to change the backgrounds from Sketchup models, but I also changed how the character portraits would be displayed.
